What is the best thing?

AN 1.71

“Monks, I do not see a single thing that gives rise to wholesome qualities, or makes unwholesome qualities decline, like noble friends. When you have noble friends, wholesome qualities arise and unwholesome qualities decline.”

AN 1.72

“Monks, I do not see a single thing that gives rise to unwholesome qualities, or makes wholesome qualities decline, like pursuing evil habits and not good habits. When you pursue evil habits and not good habits, unwholesome qualities arise and wholesome qualities decline.”

AN 1.73

“Monks, I do not see a single thing that gives rise to wholesome qualities, or makes unwholesome qualities decline, like pursuing good habits and not evil habits. When you pursue good habits and not evil habits, wholesome qualities arise and unwholesome qualities decline.”

AN 1.74

“Monks, I do not see a single thing that prevents the factors helpful to enlightenment from arising like unwise attention. Also, I do not see a single thing, if they’ve already arisen, prevents them from being fully developed like unwise attention. When you attend unwisely, the factors helpful to enlightenment don’t arise, or, if they’ve already arisen, they’re unable to develop.”

AN 1.75

“Monks, I do not see a single thing that gives rise to the factors helpful to enlightenment like wise attention. Also, I do not see a single thing, if they’ve already arisen, that fully develops them like wise attention. When you attend wisely, the factors helpful to enlightenment arise, or, if they’ve already arisen, they’re able to develop.”

“Monks, loss of relatives is a small thing. Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.”

AN 1.77

“Monks, growth of relatives is a small thing. Wisdom is the best thing to grow. So you should train like this: ‘We will grow in wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.”

“Monks, loss of wealth is a small thing. Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.”

“Monks, growth of wealth is a small thing. Wisdom is the best thing to grow. So you should train like this: ‘We will grow in wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.”

“Monks, loss of fame is a small thing. Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.”
