The Monk 2

A monk who guards their sense faculties and are moderate in eating will live happily.

This discourse was taught by the Blessed One, taught by the Arahant, the fully enlightened Supreme Buddha. This is as I heard:

“Endowed with two things, a monk lives happily and does not experience trouble, distress, and despair. At the breakup of the body, after death, a good destination is to be expected. What are the two? Guarding the doors of the sense faculties and eating in moderation. Monks, endowed with these two things, a monk lives happily and does not experience trouble, distress, or despair.

This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said. So, with regard to this, it was said:

The eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body—a monk who guards these doors well is moderate in eating and restrains his sense faculties, experiences happiness in body and mind.

Not burned by body and not burned by mind, such a person lives happily by day and by night.

This, too, is the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One. This is exactly as I heard.
