ItivuttakaItv 57 Dutiya Āsava Sutta
Taints 2

The Buddha explains how a liberated monk’s taints are destroyed.

This discourse was taught by the Blessed One, taught by the Arahant, the fully enlightened Supreme Buddha. This is as I heard:

“Monks, there are three taints. What three? The taint of sensuality, the taint of existence, and the taint of ignorance. Monks, these are the three taints.”

This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said. So, with regard to this, it was said:

The liberated monk’s taints of sensuality are destroyed, his ignorance is removed completely, and his taint of existence is exhausted. He is liberated from defilements and is without defilements. Having conquered Māra with his army, he bears his final body.

This, too, is the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One. This is exactly as I heard.
