This discourse was taught by the Blessed One, taught by the Arahant, the fully enlightened Supreme Buddha. This is as I heard,
“Monks, there are three cravings. What three? Craving for sensuality, craving for existence, and craving for non-existence. Monks, these are the three cravings.”
This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said. So, with regard to this, it was said:
Beings fettered by the bondage of craving and whose minds delight in the existence of this or that are captured by Māra. These beings are not freed from Māra’s bond. They continue their journey through their misery of birth and death.
But those who have removed completely craving are freed from craving for the existence of this or that, and those who have attained the destruction of taints have crossed over the world.
This, too, is the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One. This is exactly as I heard.
