Cleanliness

The Buddha explains the three types of cleanliness.

This discourse was taught by the Blessed One, taught by the Arahant, the fully enlightened Supreme Buddha. This is as I heard:

“Monks, there are three kinds of cleanliness. What are the three? Bodily cleanliness, verbal cleanliness, and mental cleanliness. Monks, these are the three kinds of cleanliness.

This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said. So, with regard to this, it was said:

Clean in body, clean in speech, and clean in mind and taintless—one who possesses these three kinds of cleanliness is called one who has removed completely all evil.”

This, too, is the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One. This is exactly as I heard.
