Unwholesome Thoughts

The Buddha explains three kinds of unwholesome thoughts.

This discourse was taught by the Blessed One, taught by the Arahant, the fully enlightened Supreme Buddha. This is as I heard,

“Monks, there are three kinds of unwholesome thoughts. What three? A thought concerned with not wanting to be despised by others; a thought concerned with gain, honor, and fame; and a thought concerned with defiled friendship in the guise of sympathy.

These, monks, are the three kinds of unwholesome thoughts.

This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said. So, with regard to this, it was said:

The monk who is concerned with being well-liked, who is concerned with gain, honor, and respect, and who delights in the company of kings and ministers is far from the destruction of fetters.

But having abandoned children and belongings, marriage and family life, a monk can attain supreme enlightenment.

This, too, is the meaning of what was said by the Blessed One. This is exactly as I heard.
