UdānaUd 4.10 Sāriputta Sutta
Arahant Sāriputta

The Supreme Buddha freely praises his excellent monks.

This is as I heard from the Blessed One. Those days, the Blessed One was living in the province of Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Park, at Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. One day Venerable Sāriputta was sitting not far from the Blessed One, his legs crossed, his body upright, reflecting on the peace within himself of being free from defilements. The Blessed One saw Venerable Sāriputta sitting not far away, his legs crossed, his body upright, reflecting on the peace within himself of being free from defilements.

Then, on realizing the benefit of liberation, the Blessed One spoke the following inspired verse:

“The monk is calm, his mind is peaceful, he has cut the cord of existence. Journeying in the cycle of rebirth has ended. He is freed from Māra’s bond.”
