SN 55.31 Abhisanda Sutta
Streams of Merit 1

There are four kinds of streams of merit, streams of wholesomeness that generate happiness.

At the city of Sāvatthī.

“Monks, there are four kinds of streams of merit, streams of wholesomeness that generate happiness. What are these four streams of merit? Firstly, a noble disciple has unshakable confidence in the Buddha… This is the first kind of stream of merit, stream of wholesomeness that generates happiness.

“Furthermore, a noble disciple has unshakable confidence in the Dhamma… This is the second kind of stream of merit, stream of wholesomeness that generates happiness.

“Furthermore, a noble disciple has unshakable confidence in the Saṅgha… This is the third kind of stream of merit, stream of wholesomeness that generates happiness.

“Furthermore, a noble disciple has the virtue that is loved by the noble ones, unbroken, flawless, unblemished, not caught up in craving, freed from wrong views, praised by wise people and leading to concentration. This is the fourth kind of stream of merit, stream of wholesomeness that generates happiness. These are the four kinds of streams of merit, streams of wholesomeness that generate happiness.”
