Footprints of the Gods 2

How can we practice as gods do?

“Monks, these four footprints of the gods are in order to purify unpurified beings and cleanse unclean beings.

“What are the four footprints of the gods? Firstly, a noble disciple has unshakable confidence in the Buddha ‘That Blessed One is liberated, self enlightened, has true knowledge and pure conduct, attained Nibbāna, knower of the world, supreme trainer of beings, teacher of gods and humans, the most generous, the most fortunate.’

“Then he reflects: ‘What now is the footprint of the gods?’ He understands: ‘I hear that at present, the gods consider non-harming to be supreme. Following them, I also shouldn’t harm any creature who is fearless or subject to fear. I definitely live with the quality called the footprint of the gods.’ This is the first footprint of the gods in order to purify unpurified beings and cleanse unclean beings.

“Furthermore, a noble disciple has unshakable confidence in the Dhamma… the Saṅgha…

“Furthermore, a noble disciple’s virtue is loved by the noble ones, unbroken, flawless, unblemished, not caught up in craving, freed from wrong views, praised by wise people and leading to concentration.

“Then he reflects: ‘What now is the footprint of the gods?’ He understands: ‘I hear that at present, the gods consider non-harming to be supreme. Following them, I also shouldn’t harm any creature who is fearless or subject to fear. I definitely live with the quality called the footprint of the gods.’ This is the fourth footprint of the gods in order to purify unpurified beings and cleanse unclean beings. These four footprints of the gods are in order to purify unpurified beings and cleanse unclean beings.”
