At one time, Venerable Sāriputta was living at the city of Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Ānanda, after finishing meditation, went to the Venerable Sāriputta, exchanged greetings and polite conversation and asked, “Friend, how many things do people have to have in order for the Buddha to declare that they’re a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in miserable worlds, headed for Nibbāna?”
“Friend, people have to possess four things in order for the Buddha to declare that they’re a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in miserable worlds, headed for Nibbāna.
“What four? The noble disciple has unshakable confidence in the Buddha… the Dhamma… the Saṅgha… And he has virtue loved by the noble ones… leading to concentration. People have to possess these four things in order for the Buddha to declare that they’re a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in miserable worlds, headed for Nibbāna.”
