“Monks, I say that the destruction of defilements is for one who knows and sees, not for one who does not know or see. For one who knows and sees what? The destruction of defilements is for one who knows and sees suffering. The destruction of defilements is for one who knows and sees the origin of suffering. The destruction of defilements is for one who knows and sees the cessation of suffering. The destruction of defilements is for one who knows and sees the path that leads to the cessation of suffering.
“Therefore, monks, you should make an effort to understand: ‘This is suffering.’ You should make an effort to understand: ‘This is the origin of suffering.’ You should make an effort to understand: ‘This is the cessation of suffering.’ You should make an effort to understand: ‘This is the path that leads to the cessation of suffering.’”
