SN 3.23 Loka Sutta
The World

What three things arise in the world for the harm, suffering and discomfort of beings?

At the city of Sāvatthī…

Seated to one side, King Pasenadi asked the Buddha, “Bhante, how many things arise in the world for the harm, suffering, and discomfort of beings?”

“Great king, three things arise in the world for the harm, suffering, and discomfort of beings. What three? Greed, hate, and delusion. These three things arise in the world for the harm, suffering, and discomfort of beings.”

“When greed, hate, and delusion,
have arisen inside oneself,
they harm a person of wicked heart,
as a tree is destroyed by its own fruit.”
